In Respiratory Therapy, we see just how important lung health is as we do not notice our breathing until it is compromised. Prevention, early detection and education is key. Our Registered Respiratory Therapist has seen countless people in Northern Alberta, where farming, logging, oil & gas, construction and many other types of work, can and has caused lung issues. These concerns, short term, long term, or permanent, can affect your life drastically when you still need to work and provide for your family. Sometimes lungs can heal and improve, but a lot of the damage is irreversible. Safety measures, equipment and policies has greatly improved over time but there is still risk, still unexpected exposures and situations that can arise. This is the nature of industry, and industry is a major area of employment for our province, especially in the north.

This is why it is important to have the availability of Spirometry testing and consultation with a Registered Respiratory Therapist for the industry and corporate community. Spirometry measures lung function through the amount and speed of air forcefully exhaled. It is used to help in the diagnosis of lung diseases and conditions, monitor current lung conditions, assess effectiveness of lung treatments and screen for occupational-related lung disorders. Performing Spirometry pre-employment gives a baseline of your current lung condition at time of hire. Then follow-up spirometry is done periodically, post exposure, annually or semi-annually (depending on your employer's regulations/policies), to monitor your lung function and safety. This testing also helps indicate lung fitness for the work/tasks that you may perform throughout your employment.

We provide respiratory assessments and give direction to seek further physician assessment or other services and testing should the need arise. Provide education and information on current or new lung conditions/occupational exposures/triggers/inhaled medications/respiratory precautions/coping and how to work with shortness of breath/breathing techniques with exercise to improve endurance and ability to work/conserving your energy to work effectively/controlled coughing/tobacco/vaping cessation and discuss other respiratory concerns.

This course shows workers how to work safely in and around hydrogen sulphide (H2S) environments.

H2S is a naturally occurring gas. It is often referred to as sour gas, acid gas, stink damp or sulphurated hydrogen. H2S is colorless, heavier than air in its pure state, and extremely toxic. It can also deaden your sense of smell. In low concentrations, it has a rotten egg smell and causes eye and throat irritation. At higher concentrations, it can cause death.

For these reasons, training in how to protect yourself is crucial in any industry where H2S might be encountered. This course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to help them identify and detect H2S, mitigate the hazards of working in an H2S environment, and respond to an incident involving an H2S release. It includes both theory and practical application exercises.

As a Respiratory therapist, I see just how vital lung health is as we do not notice our breathing until it is compromised. Prevention, early detection and education are critical. I see so many people in Northern Alberta, where farming, logging, oil & gas, construction, and many other types of work can and have caused lung issues. Short-term, long-term, and permanent concerns can affect your life drastically when you still need to work and provide for your family. Sometimes lungs can heal and improve, but a lot of the damage is irreversible. Safety measures, equipment, and policies have greatly improved over time, but there is still a risk, unexpected exposures, and situations that can arise.
